Exploring Quito

After waking and getting ready this morning, Jessie and I went to the roof to do our devotionals and have some quiet time. The city was already awake with people walking, driving, and busing to work. This is the view from the roof!

Cotopaxi peaks through the cloud and buildings.

Part of our devotional this morning was Isiah 6:1-12. It brought brought back the memories of the last time I was in Ecuador and how I desired to come back to work with the people and their animals. How awesome is God and his plan for all of us! I returned back downstairs to the smell of bacon. Dam, David and Kendra were all working together to make pancakes, bacon and eggs for breakfast. I am not sure if David was doing more cooking or more entertaining. We all gathered in the kitchen and living room to enjoy a fantastic breakfast!

Our firs activity today after breakfast was catching the Quito tour bus. Even being in the middle of the city there are gardens and flowers everywhere!

Beautiful Hibiscus

Looking back down the road!

Tour time!

Inglesia la Basilica

Each of the basilica doors depicted a different story in the bible.

Quigs admiring the animals in the architecture

If you look closely you can see the different native animals that are part of the basilica's structure.

There was a man practicing singing and it sounded absolutely beautiful!

We made it to the top!!

The trek up and down was not for the faint of heart. Don't worry, no one got hurt! It was an adrenaline rush though.

This where we had just climbed up. This was taken from the clock towers.

This was an absolutely beautiful building. It represents the Catholic influence on this culture and hopefully it will continue to be a reminder to all people of God and the work of the church.

Our next stop was Mirador el Panecillo. It is a french statue made of aluminum and tar that is larger than the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Brazil. The statue is based on the Revelation 12: 1- 10.

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in painas she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[a] And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.
There was a lot of traffic along the way so we had some selfie fun on the bus!

In Quito the buildings come in almost every color with beautiful architecture!

We found the real Gringotts! Just kidding, it was the Central Bank of Ecuador.

Panacillo

For Lunch we ate at Pims. The restaurant was all windows on the cliff overlooking Quito. We got this fancy apple juice as compliments from the house.

My lunch! It was fish with roasted veggies and potatoes. It was some of the best fish I have ever had!

Emily got the chicken for lunch! It was just as pretty!

Don't forget dessert! Warm brownie with homemade ice cream!

Needless to say we all left Panacillo very full and happy. The rest of the bus tour was backtracking to where we began. Some of us even took a siesta.

City Center

You can see how narrow the roads are from this picture. I was amazed at how well the tour bus driver was able to maneuver through the streets and traffic.

Dan Shedd then took us on a tour of the hospital that the HCJB ministry sponsors. He also explained to us that HCJB was the short wave radio ministry that reached out around the world in 27 different languages to preach God's word. And now that media is changing so is their ministry. It has become a ministry through the work of the hospital and training Latin american missionaries to go to places around the world where North Americans aren't always welcome. It is an inspiring movement to adapt to the ever changing world that we live in and to be able to serve God with the gift of medicine. All the people in this ministry are acting as His hands to follow His will.

Another beautiful hibiscus
After we returned to the apartment, we had to get our bags repacked. We head to Rio Blanco tomorrow to start our mission. We all worked together to get the bags packed and the children's ministry coloring and beading activities put together. So of course being the big kids that we are... we had to try out the beading activity for ourselves. It was a fun time of laughing and teasing one another. Some of us even got a bracelet made.

A cuddle puddle while we are waiting for dinner to be ready.

Dinner was homemade lasagna, garlic bread, and veggies. After a long day out and about, all of us were thankful to have a nice dinner together.

"You know you burn more calories being at a higher elevation"- David

I startled Kendra with the flash... ooops. She and I laughed at the picture and we thought you all would enjoy it too!

HCJB sign lit up before we began our devotional

We finished the night with Dan sharing his testimony about his family's ministry, singing, and prayer. It is truly God's work to see how our team has become so cohesive in less than 24 hours. Tomorrow we have a 6.5 hour journey with stops along the way. So please pray for us to have safe travels!
